Hey Glammies!! It's that time again!! I just finished an amazing book so thought I would do a book review on "Girl, Wash Your Face" by Rachel Hollis. If you haven't read this book you are in for a real treat and if you haven't heard of it yet, GIRL what are you waiting for??!! I mentioned in my previous book review (I'll link it below in case you want to hop to that after you finish this post) I drive a lot and so I listen to a lot of books via my Audible app on my phone. This book was no exception and what I'll tell you is I really enjoyed the fact that Rachel narrates the entire book herself which I really appreciate when the author does that. Not that it's terrible when they don't but I just really enjoy when the author that wrote the words, reads the book because it's their story and I love hearing the emotions in their voice because it's personal to them.
I really didn't know what to expect when I picked this book up. I was recommended this book via the little Amazon search results that looked at my Audible collection and determined via analytics that it would be perfect for me and then one of my girlfriends had said she read some of it on a recent beach trip and I thought I'd give it a whirl. I had heard that it had some great reviews and some podcasts I'm listening to on successful business women had mentioned her so I went for it. Oh man, this was more than I bargained for and then some! Score!!
If I had to choose a few words to describe this book I would use witty, dry, sarcastic (but in a hilariously good way), raw, thoughtful, and authentic. It's obvious that Rachel went layers deep in writing this book to articulate what was going on at an emotional and psychological level depending on the life event she was sharing, and was authentic about the good, the bad, and the ugly, which I really appreciate as a reader.
Each chapter starts out with "The Lie" that she had/has told herself or been told throughout her life and then she shares her personal experience and how she's walked through that lie and turned it on it's head to triumph over it and shares at the end of the chapter what worked/works for her in overcoming "The Lie."
What resonated with me was while our lives aren't identical in the various life events that have taken place in each of our lives, the lies that she discusses are so universal that I was able to connect immediately with her story, and I'll betcha you'll be able to do the same thing.
She also gets real in the book, so instead of a fluffy white cloud at the end of some of the chapters that would make us feel warm and fuzzy, there's some tough love that personifies the grit that it really takes to overcome, be successful, etc which I find so useful in the real world and to really become the person you were meant to be.
The very end of the book closes with an interview where Rachel is asked a series of questions that she answers and that was probably one of my most favorite parts of the book because it really brought together everything and at the time I hadn't heard her speak on a podcast or anything, so I could hear how she communicated separate from reading her book, which I enjoyed. Since then I've heard her interview on various podcasts and I appreciate her consistency and realness that she brings because it feels real to the person I got to know during her book versus a whole different person showing up...does that make sense?
This book would also make a great re-read list because as we go through different seasons in our lives at different times, some of the chapters may connect with you differently depending on where you are at in your life and that is constantly changing. There are so many issues that are covered in this book that are relatable depending on what you are going through on your journey to become the person you were meant to be.
All in all, I really enjoyed "Girl, Wash Your Face" by Rachel Hollis and I'm eager to read her new one "Girl, Stop Apologizing", so stay tuned!!
